Montgomery County obtained its territory from
Hamilton county in 1803. As of 2000, the population was 559,062. It was named in
honor of
Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775
while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. The county seat is Dayton.

Jefferson Township, Kettering, Mad River Township, Madison Township, Miami
Township, Miamisburg, Moraine, New Lebanon, Northridge, Oakwood, Perry Township,
Phillipsburg, Randolph Township, Riverside, Shiloh, Springboro, Trotwood, Union,
Van Buren Township, Vandalia, Verona, Washington Township, Wayne Township, West
Carrollton, and Woodbourne-Hyde Park.
*Montgomery County, Ohio is situated in the south
west part of the state, and contains 480 square miles. It is drained by Miami river and its
branches. The surface is level or slightly rolling; soil, generally fertile. Capital, Dayton.
There were in 1840, neat cattle 16,245, sheep 29,631, swine 39,298; wheat 365,938 bushels
produced, rye 54,227, Indian corn 814,707, buckwheat 3,359, barley 4,728, oats 374,481,
potatoes 34,098, sugar 122,394 pounds; 130 stores, capital $426,800; 2 lumber yards,
capital $65,000; 3 fulling mills, 5 woolen factories, 6 cotton factories 3,530 spindles,
12 tanneries, 30 distilleries, 2 breweries, 2 potteries, 34 flouring mills, 11 grist mills,
56 saw mills, 2 oil mills, 2 printing offices, 2 binderies, 1 weekly and 1 periodical newspaper.
Capital in manufactures $423,160. 2 academies 82 students, 100 schools 7,122 scholars.
Population: 31,938.
